Nathaniel Taylor
B i o g r a p h y
Cellist Nathaniel Taylor began studying cello at the age of ten. At the age of 15, he was accepted into the National Symphony Youth Fellowship Program, where he studied with NSO cellist Steven Honigberg. He received his Bachelor of Music and a Graduate Performance Diploma from the Boston Conservatory studying with cellist Rhonda Rider and is currently pursuing a Professional Studies Certificate. He has played in masterclasses for David Hardy, Zuill Bailey, Thomas Landschoot, Matt Haimovitz, David Teie, Norman Fischer, Mihail Jojatu, Gautier Capućon, Judith Eissenberg of the Lydian Quartet, Kirill Gerstein, Jonathan Bass, Shanghai String Quartet, Juilliard String Quartet, Jupiter String Quartet, and Muir String Quartet. He has studied with Steven Honigberg, Astrid Schween, Andrew Mark, Thomas Landschoot, Scott Kluksdahl, Steven Pologe, and is currently studying with Rhonda Rider.
Nathaniel has served as principal cellist and assistant principal cellist for the Boston Conservatory Orchestra in pieces by Gershwin, Haydn, Dvorak, Khachaturian, Brahms, Mozart, and Zwilich. He has appeared as soloist with the Hemenway Strings, a conductorless ensemble led by internationally acclaimed violinist Lynn Chang, in performances of "Fratres" by Arvo Part and the Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor by Antonio Vivaldi.
An active chamber musician, Nathaniel has been chosen numerous times to play in the Chamber Music Honors Concerts at the Boston Conservatory in performances of Berg String Quartet Op.3, Ravel String Quartet, Shostakovich Piano Quintet, Brahms Piano Trio No.1 in B Major, Dvorak “Dumky” Trio, and Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. He was also invited to play on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center as well as Sirius XM Radio with the BoCoCelli Quartet and the “No Strings Attached” Brass Quintet.
After winning the 2016-2017 Boston Conservatory Concerto Competition, Nathaniel made his solo debut with the Boston Conservatory Orchestra in a performance of the Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85 by Edward Elgar. He was also awarded the Grand Prize at the 2016 MA-ASTA Masters Competition.
Nathaniel was accepted into the Tanglewood Music Center as a Tanglewood Fellow for the 2017 season. Here he was able to work with world-renowned musicians and conductors such as Andris Nelsons, Charles Dutoit, Bramwell Tovey, Stefan Asbury, Thomas Ades, John Harbison, and the Juilliard String Quartet.
Nathaniel currently plays on a 1982 Gregg Alf cello that is currently on loan to him from the Amati Foundation in Pasadena, CA.
